The 2018 Junior Fellrunning Inter Counties race was held at the village of Charlesworth
near to Glossop on Saturday the 30th of June.
The event was also the final race in the 6 race English Junior fell Championships
which guaranteed good fields in all of the races. Whilst there were races for all
of the Junior age groups, Under 9s, Under 11s, Under 13s, Under 15s, Under 17s and
Under 19s only the Under 17s and Under 19s boys and girls contest the Inter Counties
Championships, boys and girls running together in the same race.
Buxton Athletic club and Des Gibbons hosted and organised the event starting and
finishing from Glossop Rugby club, everything was well organised with good tough
runnable routes with good viewpoints for parents and spectators alike. Just like
the Senior Inter Counties race the day was once again a proper scorcher, it was hard
enough just spectating never mind running up and down big hills in the heat of the
day, well done and full credit to everyone who ran.
The Under 17s boys Inter Counties race was won by Yorkshire with Cumbria 2nd and
our Lancashire team of Mathew Knowles ( 2nd ) Joel Taylor ( 8th ) and Kurtis Mitton
17th in the Bronze Medal position.
In the Under 17s girls race Yorkshire once again were Gold medal winners with Northern
Ireland in Silver and Cumbria rounding off the podium with the Bronze medal. The
Lancashire team of Bethany Reid ( 7th ) Eleesha Charnley ( 11th ) and Lily Haygarth
( 18th ) were just out of the medals in 4th place.
Lancashire were only able to field 2 Under 19 girls but as this race is 2 to count
we were fortunate, and Finty Royle ( 3rd ) fresh from England duty recently in Italy
and Minnie Targett ( 7th ) took the bronze medal although with the same points as
2nd placed Yorkshire who were given the Silver medal on countback. North Wales were
Gold medal winners.
This is a difficult age group to find county runners for despite my best efforts
even contacting Lancashire clubs and posting on Social media etc. I know that Lancashire
weren’t the only county with this problem and several other counties were struggling
to field the full team of 3 Under 19s girls. I’m not sure of the answer.
In the Under 19s boys race Yorkshire claimed the Gold with Cumbria runners up and
Northern Ireland taking the Bronze medal. The Lancashire team of Nicholas Hennessey
( 13th ) Ben Kirkman ( 18th ) and Tyler Bowden ( 19th ) finished in 5th place.
A big thank you to all of the Juniors who ran, for your commitment to the County
team and for your efforts on the day on tough courses in testing conditions. Everyone
who was selected turned up on the day and ran and wore the County vest with pride.
Thanks also to all of the parents for your help and support, it’s much appreciated.
The selection race for the 2019 Junior Inter counties fell Championships will once
again most likely be at the Pendle Fell race at Barley in April. Look out for details.
